York Region School Board Wismer Public School has partnered with Canada One Family Network to provide more than 300 students, staff and community members with a wide range culturally responsive art based experiences in line with the school's board Indigenous Education and Equity Strategy, Ontario Curriculum and Directions Action Plan 2.0.
Some partnerships have included having a Lion Dance for all grades students two years in a row in support of Lunar New Year.
The “Year of the Dragon” community night in February of 2023 where hundreds of families and students participated in a wide array of art activities and experiences coordinated by Canada One Family Network.
These activities were especially important as they were responsive and affirming to the identities of the many East Asian families and students. It was an opportunity for many members of the York Region community and schools to engage in and learn more about culturally responsive practices.
The feedback provided to us by families, students and staff were very positive for all of the events. More than 20 artists, materials and staff members to make these events a success.
