Asian Heritage Arts Festival VI – Boundless Impressions: The Allure of Eastern Ink Painting

On May 24, 2025, the Boundless Impressions Art Exhibition opened at the Oriental Cultural Centre in Toronto, Canada. Organized by Yajing Art Studio and co-hosted by several Chinese and Canadian cultural institutions, the exhibition runs from May 24 to June 1.

The show features 50 new ink paintings by renowned Canadian Chinese artist Ren Ya, offering a focused presentation of her latest explorations and unique perspective in the field of traditional East Asian ink art.

“Boundless Impression“” evokes the idea that the landscape of the mind knows no limits, and that creative expression transcends all boundaries. Using traditional East Asian ink as her medium, artist Ren Ya engages in a profound dialogue with nature, emotion, and the inner spirit through her spontaneous and expressive brushwork.

Departing from the figurative conventions of classical ink painting, Ren fuses personal emotion, aesthetic sensibility, and an intimate awareness of the universe into her work, crafting a visual language full of tension and vitality. Her brushstrokes are fluid and unrestrained, imbued with dynamic rhythm: the undulating mountains suggest the unfolding of life, while the liveliness of flowers and birds conveys delicate emotional resonance. Each piece reflects her deep perception of life’s rhythms and the boundless cosmos.

As a female artist, Ren Ya brings a heightened sensitivity to her work, infusing her paintings with qualities often associated with the feminine: resilience, empathy, and delicacy. These elements imbue her art with a warm humanistic spirit and rich emotional depth.

She continuously pushes beyond the constraints of traditional techniques, expanding the expressive potential of ink painting within a contemporary context. Her works retain the classical spirit of East Asian ink while embracing modern sensibilities, becoming a bridge between the individual soul and the vast rhythms of nature and the cosmos.

During the exhibition, two special art-and-healing events will be held, combining visual arts with therapeutic practice. Co-hosted by HerArt founder and senior Toronto-based art therapist Ms. Xiaoxiao (online name: Hu Bu Ku), Chinese ink tattoo artist Echo Quan Wei, and UNESCO-certified art therapist Ren Ya:

1."Reflecting the Heart Through Ink" – A Meditative Viewing Experience

Description: The three facilitators will guide participants through a mindful viewing journey, encouraging inner resonance and self-discovery through quiet observation and reflective interaction with the artworks.

2."Wandering Heart in Ink" – Art Therapy Workshop

Time: May 30, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Description: Immersed in Ren Ya’s ink painting universe, participants will be guided by the three facilitators to release emotions through the scent of ink and express inner imagery freely on xuan paper.

Artist Biography: Ren Ya

Ren Ya is a nationally certified First-Class Artist of China and an accomplished painter specializing in traditional Chinese ink painting. In 2005, she was awarded the title of "Chinese Painter" after passing the ZSQ9000A National Art Certification. She is currently a member of the Yunnan Branch of the China Artists Association, the Kunming Artists Association, the China Painting and Calligraphy Research Society, and the China Painting and Calligraphy Association.

Since relocating to Canada, Ren Ya has continued to promote cultural exchange between China and Canada. She has served as a Research Fellow at the Canadian Institute of Chinese Cultural Arts, former President of the Canadian Foundation for Cultural Relics and Arts Research (Nov. 2019 – Dec. 2021), and Chair of the Visual Arts Division of the Atlantic Cultural Exchange Association of Canada.

Selected Artistic Achievements – Ren Ya

• May 2012: Solo exhibition at the Yunnan Provincial Library, China.

• July 2013: Invited by the Department of Culture, Province of New Brunswick, Canada, to hold a solo exhibition; featured in a special interview by CBC/Radio-Canada. Participated in the Centennial Exhibition at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John; her work The Square was auctioned by the Jiuding Club in Montreal to support Chinese international students. She was the only female Chinese ink artist in the exhibition.

• 2016: Awarded Bronze Prize for Ink Painting at the Korea International Art Exhibition; received the Gold Prize for Bird-and-Flower Painting at the Canadian “Dragon Rhythm International Arts Festival.”

• 2017: Won the Gold Medal for Excellence in Bird-and-Flower Painting at the 2nd Toronto International Art Festival; co-hosted the duo exhibition East & West: Flying Colors and Flowing Rhythms with Canadian artist Michael Jansen; published The Ink Collection of Ren Ya: Fragrant Brushwork.

• 2018: Received the “Excellence in Ink” Gold Award and the “Cultural Heritage Award” at the Hanmo Qingfeng International Art Exhibition; her works were selected by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and received the Gold Prize.

• November 2019: Held a major solo exhibition in Toronto, showcasing 80 works.

• April 2022: Presented her solo exhibition Radiance of Ink & Color in Toronto, featuring 40 pieces; in June, participated in Great Love Under the Stars, a peace-themed art exhibition.

Ren Ya’s artistic journey spans both China and Canada. Beyond her creative work, she is deeply committed to promoting traditional Chinese culture abroad. Through curating, public talks, and teaching, she plays a vital role in the global dissemination of contemporary ink art.

Festival des arts du patrimoine asiatique VI – Impressions sans frontières : La beauté envoûtante de l’encre orientale

Le 24 mai 2025, l’exposition artistique Impressions sans frontières a été inaugurée au Centre culturel oriental de Toronto, au Canada. Organisée par l’Atelier d’art Yajing, avec le soutien de plusieurs institutions culturelles chinoises et canadiennes, l’exposition se tient du 24 mai au 1er juin.

Elle présente 50 nouvelles œuvres à l’encre de la célèbre artiste sino-canadienne Ren Ya, mettant en lumière ses récentes explorations artistiques et sa vision singulière dans le domaine de la peinture traditionnelle à l’encre de style oriental.

« Impressions sans frontières » symbolise un esprit sans limite et une création affranchie de toute contrainte. À travers le médium de l’encre traditionnelle orientale, l’artiste Ren Ya engage un dialogue profond avec la nature, les émotions et le monde intérieur, en laissant libre cours à une gestuelle spontanée et expressive.

S’écartant de la représentation figurative propre à la peinture classique à l’encre, elle intègre dans son art ses émotions personnelles, son expérience esthétique et sa perception intuitive de l’univers, forgeant ainsi un langage artistique d’une grande intensité. Ses traits de pinceau, libres et dynamiques, insufflent une vitalité singulière : les reliefs des montagnes évoquent l’élan de la vie, tandis que le mouvement des fleurs et des oiseaux révèle une sensibilité subtile. Chaque œuvre reflète sa compréhension profonde du rythme vital et des merveilles infinies de l’univers.

En tant qu’artiste femme, Ren Ya fait preuve d’une sensibilité aiguë, intégrant à ses œuvres des qualités typiquement féminines telles que la résilience, l’empathie et la délicatesse. Ses créations dégagent ainsi une chaleur humaine et une profondeur émotionnelle remarquables.

Elle ne cesse de repousser les limites des techniques traditionnelles, élargissant les possibilités expressives de l’encre dans un cadre contemporain. Ses œuvres conservent l’esprit classique de la peinture orientale tout en s’inscrivant dans une esthétique moderne, devenant un véritable pont entre l’âme individuelle et le souffle du monde naturel et cosmique.

Pendant la durée de l’exposition, deux événements artistiques spéciaux mêlant art visuel et thérapie seront organisés. Ces ateliers sont coanimés par Mme Xiaoxiao (nom en ligne : Hu Bu Ku), art-thérapeute expérimentée basée à Toronto et fondatrice de la marque HerArt, l’artiste chinoise de tatouage à l’encre Echo Quan Wei, et Mme Ren Ya, art-thérapeute certifiée par l’UNESCO :

1.« L’encre comme miroir du cœur » – Expérience méditative de contemplation artistique

Description : Les trois animatrices guideront les participants dans une exploration intérieure à travers une observation attentive des œuvres, afin de faire émerger résonances personnelles et voix intérieure.

2.« L’âme en voyage à travers l’encre » – Atelier d’art-thérapie

Heure : 30 mai, de 15h00 à 17h00

Description : Plongés dans l’univers de l’encre de Ren Ya, les participants seront invités à libérer leurs émotions et à peindre librement leurs paysages intérieurs sur papier de riz, portés par les arômes subtils de l’encre.

Biographie de l’artiste : Ren Ya

Ren Ya est artiste peintre chinoise de premier rang, certifiée au niveau national, spécialisée dans la peinture traditionnelle à l’encre. En 2005, elle a obtenu le titre officiel de « Peintre en peinture chinoise » après avoir passé la certification artistique nationale ZSQ9000A. Elle est membre de la section du Yunnan de l’Association des artistes de Chine, de l’Association des artistes de Kunming, de la Société de recherche en peinture et calligraphie de Chine, ainsi que de l’Association chinoise de peinture et de calligraphie.

Installée au Canada, Ren Ya s’engage activement dans la promotion des échanges culturels sino-canadiens. Elle a occupé les fonctions de chercheuse à l’Institut canadien des arts et de la culture chinoise, de présidente de la Fondation canadienne pour la recherche sur les arts et les antiquités (de nov. 2019 à déc. 2021), ainsi que de présidente de la section arts visuels de l’Association canadienne d’échange culturel de l’Atlantique.

Parcours artistique sélectionné – Ren Ya

·         Mai 2012 : Exposition personnelle à la Bibliothèque provinciale du Yunnan, Chine.

·         Juillet 2013 : Invitée par le ministère de la Culture du Nouveau-Brunswick (Canada) pour une exposition personnelle ; interviewée par la chaîne nationale CBC/Radio-Canada. Participe à l’exposition du centenaire du Théâtre Impérial de Saint John ; son œuvre La Place est vendue aux enchères par le Club Jiuding de Montréal, et l’intégralité des fonds est consacrée à soutenir les étudiants chinois. Elle est la seule femme artiste en peinture chinoise représentée à cette exposition.

·         2016 : Médaille de bronze en peinture traditionnelle chinoise à l’Exposition internationale d’art de Corée ; médaille d’or pour la peinture de fleurs et d’oiseaux au Festival artistique international “Dragon Rhythm” au Canada.

·         2017 : Médaille d’or pour œuvre d’excellence en peinture de fleurs et d’oiseaux au 2e Festival international d’art de Toronto ; exposition en duo L’Est & l’Ouest : Couleurs volantes et rythmes fluides avec l’artiste canadien Michael Jansen ; publication du recueil Encres choisies de Ren Ya : Parfum des pinceaux.

·         2018 : Prix d’excellence “Or de l’Encre” et Prix de la Transmission Culturelle à l’exposition internationale Hanmo Qingfeng ; ses œuvres sont sélectionnées par le musée McMichael Canadian Art Collection et reçoivent la médaille d’or.

·         Novembre 2019 : Grande exposition personnelle à Toronto présentant 80 œuvres.

·         Avril 2022 : Exposition personnelle Lumière d’encre et de couleur à Toronto, avec 40 œuvres présentées ; participe en juin à l’exposition thématique pour la paix Amour sous les étoiles.

Le parcours artistique de Ren Ya s’étend entre la Chine et le Canada. En plus de sa création artistique, elle s’investit activement dans la promotion de la culture traditionnelle chinoise à l’international. 亚裔传统文化艺术节之六-《心象无界》艺术展 尽显东方水墨魅力

2025年5月24日在加拿大多伦多东方文化中心，由雅境艺术坊主办，多家中加文化机构协办《心象无界》艺术展。展期5月24日至6月1日。展出了加拿大著名国画家任娅女士50幅水墨新作，集中展现她在东方水墨艺术领域的最新探索与独特视角。

《心象无界》寓意“心境无垠，创作无界”，画家任娅以东方水墨为媒介，在自由挥洒之间，与自然、情感及精神世界展开深度对话。她跳脱传统水墨的具象描绘，将个人情感、审美体验与对宇宙自然的体悟融汇于笔墨之中，形成极具张力的艺术语言。她的笔触自由奔放、气韵生动：山川的起伏中蕴含着生命的延展，花鸟的灵动中流淌着细腻情感。每一幅作品都折射出她对生命律动与宇宙万象的深刻感悟。

作为一位女性艺术家，任娅以敏锐的感知力，将女性特有的柔韧、包容与细腻融入画面，使作品散发出温暖的人文情怀与丰富的情感张力。她不断突破传统技法的束缚，在当代表达中拓展水墨语言的边界，使作品既保留东方水墨的古典精神，又融入现代语境，成为连接个体心灵与天地自然的艺术桥梁。

艺术家简介：任娅

任娅，国家一级美术师、中国国画艺术家。2005年通过中国ZSQ9000A艺术体系认证，被授予“中国国画家”称号。现为中国美协云南分会、昆明市美术家协会、中国书画艺术研究会及中国书画协会会员。旅居加拿大后，任娅担任加拿大中国文化艺术研究所研究员、加拿大文物与艺术研究基金会前会长（2019.11–2021.12）、加拿大大西洋文化交流协会美协主席等职务，积极推动中加文化艺术交流。
