The 9th Age of Literati Culture Festival Concludes in Splendor

On the evening of November 3, 2024, under the dazzling lights of Markham Theatre, the 9th Age of Literati Culture Festival's “Simply Arts” concert and award ceremony came to a splendid conclusion. With gratitude to Heritage Canada and the City of Markham, this cultural celebration—organized by Canada One Family Network—brought together hundreds of local artists, including vocalists, musicians, dancers, and visual artists, along with community cultural organizations. Together, they contributed to the promotion and preservation of literati arts within the community.

Prelude

The evening opened with a moving rendition of Canada’s national anthem led by renowned mezzo-soprano Mao Ke. Following this, she performed the song “Dragon Script” alongside children from MK Singing School, accompanied by pianist and educator Helen Han. The sweet voices symbolized the new generation carrying forward Chinese cultural heritage.

Poetic Music

The CAST Youth Orchestra performed a mix of classic and original compositions, including “Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon,” “Small Town Story,” “Green High Mountain,” and the award-winning piece “Swing” by young Canadian composer Irene Huang, bringing poetic elegance and romance to the audience. Each note painted a canvas of romance and nostalgia, capturing the essence of literati dreams in the hands of a new generation.

Imagic Music

In this segment, young reciters Amy Fu and Wang Zi performed classic Chinese poems, including Su Shi’s “Remembering Red Cliffs.” and Eastern Han Dynasty literati Cao Cao’s “Viewing the Sea.” Their words intertwined with the delicate strains of Guqin player Yan Yan Zhu’s “Night Mooring at Autumn River” and Pipa artist Lilian Xiao Lei Yang’s “Waves Scouring the Sands.”

Dancers from Meimei Dance School and Brilliant Star Art Center embodied the elegance of “Joyous Literati” and the timeless grace of “Flying Apsaras,” conjuring scenes of ancient realms and bridging millennia.

After intermission, the laughter of youth filled the hall as children from Dan Drama Theater delighted the audience with a whimsical rendition of “Snow White,” their playful energy lighting up the stage.

Scenic Music

Conductor Amely Zhou led the Canadian Chinese Orchestra in a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary music. The highlight was a Song Dynasty tea ceremony presented by tea masters from Ming’s Tea. The MK Singing School choir and the CCO performed pieces inspired by pastoral poems, Du Fu’s “A Quatrain.” and Meng Haoran’s “Spring Morning.”

Flutists Tony Tong and Nicole Chan performed a lively duet, “Grasshopper and Rooster,” followed by Yutong Liu’s soulful rendition of “Reed Flower.”

The evening crescendoed as the CCO performed “Summer,” followed by a medley of world classics and the stirring traditional piece “General’s Command.” Ancient and modern fused seamlessly, the music transcending time and space.

Award Ceremony

The evening concluded with Mayor Frank Scarpitti presenting awards to over 300 artists, performers, and judges. With gold, silver, and bronze honors awarded to outstanding participants, the festival celebrated the enduring legacy of literati culture and its resonance across generations.

Professor Sun Ruixiang and educator Huang Zanyang, with gentle wisdom, celebrated the young reciters, while Li Xiangmin, former director of the Longmen Grottoes Art Institute, and artist Abby Wang, as representatives for all the judges, presented awards to the young artists of the painting contest. Thus, with music, poetry, and deep reverence for tradition, the 9th Age of Literati Culture Festival concluded, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, a lingering echo, and a promise of generations yet to come.

The awards ceremony for the Children's Poetry Competition and Art Competition was held as scheduled. The judges presented certificates and prizes to children who win various awards.
